Botanical Name ~ Ocimum basilicum 🌿Overview ~ Basil is one of those herbs that almost everyone is familiar with, especially chefs! You’ve probably used basil when cooking and preparing fresh salads, but did you know that basil also has medicinal properties? Basil is a natural anti-inflammatory, has antibacterial properties and is very high in antioxidants. It can be used to soothe the stomach, calm a cough or take the sting out of a bug bite.  🌿Ocimum basilicum belongs to the family Lamiaceae and can be found in tropical Asia, Africa, Central America and South America. It is widely cultivated commercially as a condiment or for the production of essential oil. In this review, this plant is accredited with important effects on health, in addition to being a condiment. In folk medicine it is used to treat vomiting, intestinal colic and diarrhea, menstrual pains and to improve kidney function. Some studies have demonstrated that it can be used for the treatment of hyperlipidemia and also that it has antioxidant, neuroprotective, anti-inflammatory and vasodilator properties as well as hepatoprotective effects. In view of its broad range of effects, further studies should be conducted to ascertain the possible use of this plant in clinical trials, not only for prevention but also as an adjuvant in the treatment of different diseases. 🌿Uses ~ Basil is a member of the mint family so it should come as no surprise that it’s often used to settle the stomach. The easiest way to use it is in tea. To soothe a sore throat you can brew a basil tea in the same way but skip the honey and let the tea cool then use it as a gargle. To soothe a headache add about 5 basil leaves to boiling water and continue to boil for a few minutes then cool. Sip slowly. Basil works on headaches because of it’s muscle relaxing qualities so this works best on tension headaches. Fresh Basil can be crushed and applied to a bug bite or sting to draw out the poisons and stop the itching. 🧪Active Constituents: camphor, cineole, estragol, (or methyl chavicol),eugenol, linalool, pinene, rosmarinic acid ⚠️Contraindications have not been identified ⚠️Pregnancy/Lactation~ Avoid use.
